Uncovering the Truth about Plastic Water Bottles

In the United States, plastic water bottles are bought more often than milk or soda. However, the casing nor the water inside is beneficial to our society. According to research online, not only is bottled water expensive and polluting our environment, there are also chemicals in bottled water that makes it not worth the switch. Naturalsociety.com suggests around 24,000 chemicals in our bottled water. These chemicals lower the pH in our bodies, causing side effects such as skin and eye irritation, irregular heartbeat, and other problems in the kidneys, heart, and digestive system in extreme conditions.
From this research, we, Lina Kim and Leena Elzeiny, found that we needed to spread awareness about the use of water bottles. The essential question to approach this is how we're going to spread awareness. We will do this by fundraising multiple times in order to gain enough profit so that we can buy a spot on a prominent website where we can place an advertisement that'll be made by ourselves. This leaves us with three main goals: fundraise, find places we can place our advertisement on, and create our advertisement.
Our inspiration for this project is 20% Time. This policy allows us to spend roughly 20% of our time doing a project relating to the subject, and in our case, this is every Monday in our biology class. We thought of this topic because one of us was really interested in saving the environment, and pollution is one of the leading causes for its destruction. The other one was interested in business; buying, selling, and financial stability in general. From there, we brainstormed to reach this idea, a great comprise between the two of our interests.

  1. I think that it is great that you guys want to help because it is a very big problem.Studies found that ocean boarding countries created 275 million tons of garbage annually, of which 4.8 to 12.7 million tons of plastic flowed into the oceans. I like your plan of spreading awareness by advertising and maybe you could spread awareness by creating a blog or social media that really shows the problem and your work. If not online, what type of ad are you thinking of making?

    1. If not an online ad, we were thinking at Valleyfair mall where there are the screens right as you enter, displaying ads. It must be decently cheap for a small spot because Valleyfair is local.

  2. I really like the way you used statistics to show how bad bottled water is. It is definitely something that awareness needs to be spread about. I think this blog will also help spread awareness. What sort of fundraisers were you thinking about doing?

    1. Everyone does PMT, but it is very expensive to start. We were thinking about donuts from Krispy Kream, but we are still working out the logistics.
